Suffering and pleasure at work

Work relations with animals can, like all other work relations, be based on respect, communication and intelligence, or inversely, on violence, instrumentalisation and contempt. In the livestock industry, since the beginning of the process of industrialising animal husbandry, suffering is without doubt the most common relationship shared between humans and animals. Why is there this suffering? How can we get beyond it? What conditions for farmers and animals would make them happier, rather than more miserable together?
